Overall, both EMDR and IEMT use eye movements as a therapeutic tool.
EMDR focuses on processing traumatic memories, while IEMT focuses on changing emotional responses to specific issues or memories. Both IEMT and EMDR have been shown to be effective in treating trauma and related symptoms, and the choice of therapy will depend on the individual needs and preferences of the client and the therapist. EMDR is available through the NHS and has up to a two year waiting list, as a therapist I choose to use IEMT and have a waiting list of only a few weeks as opposed to +/- 2 years.
IEMT and EMDER also differ in speed, EMDR has a structured 1-7 points over 6-12 sessions. With IEMT we can make profound changes in 1-3 sessions as we do not require all of the History Taking, Assessment, Desensitisation, Installation, Body Scan, Closure and Re Evaluation required by the NHS and EMDR Model.
Instead we totally focus on the actual therapy and working as effectively with clients as we can.
Integral Eye Movement Therapy is a fast effective therapy, perfect if 'Life has messed you up' and it can be used in conjunction with the other therapies. It utilises simple eye movements and questioning techniques for rapid change by removing negative emotions and the pictures associated with bad (PTSD) memories, as well as working with your identity... "I am useless" "I am a failure" "I am frightened" "I am so confused" "I am lonely" " I am scared" "I feel numb" "I feel so angry" "I just don't feel alive".
These techniques create transformation by reducing unwanted feelings and helping you to resolve issues. For Anxiety, Panic and Fear etc, using IEMT I show you the underlying reasons why you suffer and repeat unwanted behaviors and together we remove these without the need for digging into the past.
Unlike many psychological therapeutic processes, IEMT can be done 'content free' so you don't have to keep talking about the details of your experience or painful memories of events. Used for Trauma, however small, and PTSD, IEMT is an incredibly powerful therapy.
To date I have used IEMT for many PTSD events, a few examples are: -witnessing a fatal accident, a house fire where client watched his home burn and lost everything, flashbacks from a Royal Marine involved in body recovery after the Tsunami in Thailand in 2005, a woman whose husband had physically and psychologically abused her, she was still suffering nightmares after 10 years, a woman suffering from anxiety and fear of drowning after a boating accident, a man who woke up during a heart operation that was going wrong, an ex soldier from the Falklands War who saw his best friend blown up whilst under sniper fire and being bombed.
However, please remember, no therapy is a 'miracle cure', the therapies I practice work for most people most of the time.
Anne ten Brinke and Vera van der Laan gave several IEMT sessions at the Brain Clinic in Wamel, (Netherlands) during which the brain was measured before and after using a QEEG scanner. Luuk van Leur, director of the Brain Clinic (Center for Neurofeedback), was so enthusiastic about the remarkable results of IEMT that he wanted to collaborate on our scientific research. He mentioned that he had never seen such a remarkable change in just one session before.
Below you can see anonymized images of the QEEG brain scans before and after an IEMT session.
The top two rows provide a general impression of the brain's health in different areas. Here's an explanation of the images:
For the first two rows: The whiter, the healthier. In the first row of the very first image, you can see hotspots near the ears before the session starts. These spots correspond to the activity of the amygdala. The first image shows significant emotional unrest. In the post-session image, you can see much less activity in the same area. In the first row, in the high beta frequency, there is a circle in the middle that corresponds to the brain's control center. A lot of energy is directed there.
In the post-session image, you can see that this area has almost disappeared. In both the first and second rows, after the session, you can observe a much calmer and healthier brain pattern overall. In the bottom three rows, pink indicates the standard healthy color. The lines in these images represent the connections between brain regions where there is either too much or too little energy. Where the balance and connections in the brain are good, you won't see any lines. The lines are blue when there is insufficient connection between brain areas and red when there is excessive activity in the connection. According to the director of the Brain Clinic, the post-session image with many lines in high beta frequency shows that the brain is still very active in processing.
This is a result of immediate measurement after the session. Based on this data, neurofeedback is used to adjust which connections should be trained and which connections should be unlearned. You can get a good overall understanding from these images: IEMT not only reduces emotional unrest but also promotes restoration of connections and balance in the brain.
